Senior Aquatic Biologist

Groundwater Environmental Management Services, Inc (GEMS), is a young, dynamic and professional environmental consulting and monitoring firm based out of Maple Ontario. GEMS employs pro-active methodologies in design, permit applications and monitoring related to project environmental representation, erosion and sedimentation control, creek or wetland mitigation, fisheries assessment and groundwater control (dewatering) and all construction related activities in sensitive areas at all stages of a project. GEMS also specializes in providing accelerated services and emergency response. GEMS' main areas of expertise are concentrated within the ecological, aquatic/fisheries biology and hydrogeological service sectors.

General Job Description:

As the Senior Aquatic Biologist you will work within a multidisciplinary team of specialists to provide services for the private sector, municipalities, and regulatory agencies. Your principal responsibility will be to provide technical support and conduct permitting and assessment activities related to environmental projects - projects will focus on environmental assessment and monitoring in aquatic systems with occasional work in terrestrial systems. You will also be involved in restoration and mitigation projects. Mentorship and supervision of junior and intermediate professional staff is an important part of your role. As Senior Aquatic Biologist you will develop and grow the aquatic department’s client base and continue the relationship with existing clients.

Job Responsibilities

  • Participate in broad based assessment of aquatic and terrestrial resources that may include fishery, benthic, channel, and vegetation components in urban and rural locations
  • Conduct reach or site-based stream habitat evaluations and restoration/mitigation plans
  • Collect, manage and analysis environmental data and preparation of technical reports
  • Manage and coordinate environmental monitoring and permitting activities for infrastructure and development projects
  • Be Involved in watershed assessment and restoration planning
  • Collaborate with management, intermediate and junior professional staff in the preparation of work plans and other documentation of environmental projects
  • Cost estimating, project management, and client liaising
  • Facilitate government agency review and response regarding permitting and project particulars with DFO, MOE, MNR, and Conservation Authorities
  • Provide proposals and manage projects under the Ministry of Transportation RAQS protocol
  • Mentor and supervise junior/intermediate professional staff
  • Travel to and from jobsites on a regular basis

Qualification and Experience Requirements:

  • A BSc in ecology, environmental biology, environmental science, water resources, environmental planning, natural resource management, or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years environmental work experience in Ontario (preferred)
  • Knowledge of relevant federal and provincial environmental legislation and environmental impact assessment, particularly the Federal Fisheries Act
  • Knowledge of stream assessment protocols and methods (fish, benthic, riparian, hydrology), habitat restoration approaches and techniques, and best management practices
  • Electrofishing certification and Ontario Stream Protocol certification an asset
  • Supervisory experience
  • Very strong communication (written and oral), client relationship building and presentation skills
  • Good organizational skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
  • Familiar with GIS (ArcMap) and GPS technology
