Senior Terrestrial Ecologist / Ecologist

Groundwater Environmental Management Services, Inc (GEMS), is a young, dynamic and professional environmental consulting and monitoring firm located in Maple Ontario. GEMS employs pro-active methodologies in design, permit applications and monitoring related to; project environmental monitor representation, erosion and sedimentation control, creek or wetland mitigation, flora and fauna inventory, bird and amphibian assessments, groundwater control (dewatering) and all construction related activities in sensitive areas at all stages of a project. GEMS also specializes in providing accelerated services and emergency response. GEMS' main areas of expertise are concentrated within the ecological, aquatic/fisheries biology and hydrogeological service sectors.

General Job Description

As Senior Terrestrial Ecologist/Ecologist you will perform field site investigations including vegetation assessments, top of bank staking, bird and amphibian surveys, wetland studies and regulation compliance management. You will also prepare advanced reports to summarize field information into environmental impact statements, permit application supporting studies, characterization reports, site inspection reports and remedial plans. You will perform case management duties affiliated with technical writing, budget/project management, field studies, monitoring and assist in assurance that GEMS remains current on all applicable legislation. You will interact with third party and regulatory agents to ensure contract, federal, provincial and local regulatory compliance. Mentorship and supervision of junior and intermediate professional staff is also an important part of your role. Scheduling, ordering sampling supplies and field note taking will also be required.

Qualification and Experience Requirements

  • Participate in broad based assessment of terrestrial resources that may include vegetation, birds and amphibian components in urban and rural locations
  • Conduct habitat evaluations and restoration/mitigation plans
  • Collect, manage and analysis environmental data and preparation of technical reports
  • Manage and coordinate environmental monitoring and permitting activities for infrastructure and development projects
  • Be Involved in wetland, forest etc. assessment and restoration planning
  • Collaborate with management, intermediate and junior professional staff in the preparation of work plans and other documentation of environmental projects
  • Cost estimating, project management, and client liaising
  • Facilitate government agency review and response regarding permitting and project particulars with MOE, MNR, and Conservation Authorities
  • Provide proposals and manage projects under the Ministry of Transportation RAQS protocol
  • Mentor and supervise junior/intermediate professional staff
  • Travel to and from jobsites on a regular basis

Qualification and Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree in biology, earth science, environmental science or related major
  • Project management experience
  • Good knowledge of government regulations
  • Ecological Land Classification (ELC) training and Ontario Wetland Evaluation System (OWES) training is an asset
  • Supervisory experience
  • Very strong communication (written and oral), client relationship building and presentation skills
