Junior Hydrogeologist / Environmental

Groundwater Environmental Management Services, Inc (GEMS) is a young, dynamic and professional environmental consulting and monitoring firm based out of Maple Ontario. GEMS employs pro-active methodologies in design, permit applications and monitoring related to project environmental monitor representation, erosion and sedimentation control, creek or wetland mitigation, groundwater control (dewatering) and all construction related activities in sensitive areas at all stages of a project. GEMS also specializes in providing accelerated services and emergency response. GEMS' main areas of expertise are concentrated within the ecological, aquatic/fisheries biology and hydrogeological service sectors.

General Job Description:

The Junior Hydrogeologist will report to more senior staff who will direct tasks in the office and in the field. Field assignments will include observation and collection of data. Field work could occur in any weather and during all seasons. Office work will primarily be computer based. The role will require strict adherence with company protocols and specific methods to assist our clients to comply with government regulations and commitments.

Job Responsibilities

Field Duties:

  • Log soils in drilling and install monitoring wells
  • Collect groundwater and surface water samples.
  • Obtain water levels
  • Supervise of pumping tests
  • Site reconnaissance
  • Stream flow measurement
  • Aquifer/ feasibility studies
  • Monitoring of effects of construction
  • Install and set-up monitoring equipment
Office Duties:

  • Analyse field data
  • Preparation of borehole records
  • Preparation of report drafts
  • Assist in preparation of technical proposals
  • Data management (Excel)
  • Spreadsheet analysis of scientific problems, such as water balance
  • Technical web-based research of scientific information
  • Report formatting and assembly

Qualification and Experience Requirements:

  • Degree in earth sciences, hydrogeology, geology, geological engineering, earth science or related major
  • Minimum one year of professional experience
  • Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license, with access to vehicle for regular travel
  • Supplemental Qualifications (an asset)
  • Basic AutoCAD
  • Basic GIS
  • MODFLOW, WINFLOW, AquiferTest
  • Environmental regulations
