Digital Monitoring

Since 2005, GEMS has been creating new methods and setting standards in monitoring for environmental compliance on construction and development sites of all shapes, sizes and scopes in Ontario.

Our expertise ranges from water and excess soil quality monitoring and sampling, to aquatic and field ecology, to erosion and sediment control. From environmental inspections to guiding, planning and securing project permits to take clients from start to finish, GEMS is a full-service partner dedicated to helping contractors and builders get and keep their project moving.

Collecting data is a big part of the process. And, our digital monitoring capabilities take our insights and abilities to the next level of accuracy and predictive solution planning.

GEMS digital monitoring provides real-time data, 24/7. Our tech stays on the job, round-the-clock.

  • What is remote digital monitoring?

Simply put, digital monitoring takes into account natural occurrences that can change conditions on a site from one moment to the next.

At the same time, digital monitoring virtually eliminates the potential for human error, misjudgment or miscalculation, which could alter or spoil the data being collected. Imagine an August thunderstorm floods your site and washes out all of the designed erosion and sediment control measures installed on-site. Who gets blamed for not having or installing protections in place? Imagine having information to show that you did the right thing, and data to back it up. In the past, such an occurrence required a forensic audit by human experts that - at best - could only approximate what had changed.

Digital monitoring means that technology is on the job, round the clock, accounting for shifting conditions and unexpected events. That means no data is lost.

And, with GEMS, our DataLINKS dashboard contains valuable information that is preserved in real-time: changing conditions in water flow, water levels and other aspects of your development environment, and that is immediately factored in and accounted for.

That means that GEMS' most valuable asset - our people - have the most reliable data possible when it's time to put our minds to getting permits and keeping your project moving smoothly. The expertise and experience of our team pair with the strength of our remote monitoring tools to get results.

  • How did we develop our tech?

In 2018, GEMS recruited newly minted university grads fresh from their respective science programs, and tasked them to find the best existing equipment for monitoring the key performance indicators of construction dewatering systems:

Discharge Water Quality (For permit compliance)

Flow volume & rate (For system performance and permit compliance)

    Pressure (For system performance)

The team gathered the best environmental monitoring and communication tools from across different industries, operating under different regulatory frameworks from around the world.

GEMS tested them extensively and built a real-time Remote Digital Monitoring platform for actively managing water during construction dewatering.

This was, and still is, completely innovative in Southern Ontario’s construction industry.

We worked closely with our existing customers to find a Digital Monitoring solution that works. It took almost five years, but we’re proud to say that we did it! We developed a cost-effective way for contractors and project developers to keep up with what’s happening on their site without the need for a costly, imperfect human presence on constant guard.

GEMS data platform

Our Data Platform gives users early warning alarms for everything from low fuel levels, to high or low flow conditions, and will warn them if any trigger events, which could prevent them from keeping with contract requirements and/or permit compliance, occur.

  • DATA LINKS

Our real-time monitoring dashboard gives our customers a true-to-life insight into what’s happening at their site, 24/7.

It costs less than traditional environmental monitoring, and its accessibility means less worry and more confidence

GEMS uses several core monitoring technologies to fulfill the specific requirements of a given task or of a development project.

Our DataLINKS Real-Time Remote Monitoring Dashboard allows access to monitoring data whenever necessary using common digital messaging and two-way communication.

  • DATA BASE

These units allow up to 4 additional sensors to measure water quality, environmental conditions or system operating parameters.

And our DataCUBE provides real-time, per-gallon monitoring up to 43 million gallons daily.

And we build, test, maintain and troubleshoot every real-time monitoring solution that we put to market.

  • DATA CUBE

All-in-one portable monitoring stations for effluent quality and quantity monitoring in construction dewatering, sewer and river by-pass pumping and treatment monitoring applications.

The DataCUBE was designed to conveniently and accurately collect and record flow and water quality information remotely under the harshest conditions.

The DataCUBE can be installed anywhere on site to get you the data you want, where you want it, without the all-too-common installation obstacles.
